Joseph “Hoobler” Hornaday

  • Rank: Second Lieutenant
  • Age: 26
  • Branch: Terran Confederation Space Force
  • Billet:Pilot, 47th Fighter Wing, TCS Hermes
  • Notable Previous Billets:Pilot trainee, 367th Training Wing, TCS Wellington
  • Campaign Role: Wingman (Minor)

Bio

Medical student from the Bahama Islands on Earth, where he was approached by the ConFleet Medical Corps to become a doctor. He turned their offer down, and instead applied for Space Force Officer Candidate School. He was accepted due to his graduate academic performance and ConFleet’s need for intelligent and highly motivated pilot trainees. Attended OCS right after getting his M.D.
Hoobler was one of the top academic performers in his Officer Candidate School class, but struggled with physical fitness and military bearing. He and his fellow OCS roommate, Thad Cooper, would get IT’ed (Intensive Training) on a one-on-one basis with their Drill Instructor for failing multiple personnel and room inspections. Eventually he pulled through, graduating as a Second Lieutenant and posted to the TCS Wellington.

As a rookie trainee, Hoobler is a very booksmart and enthusiastic pilot. He can recite verbatim from the flight manual various engineering systems, tactics, ops limits, emergency procedures as if he was born with the knowledge. However, his inexperience is evident in his flying. Major Baws has given him slightly below-average marks, citing him as “lacking self-confidence and basic situational awareness”, but has recommended continued training and retention, as he clearly recognizes Hoobler’s heart and ability to learn.

Hoobler pulls it together, survives the Kilrathi ambush on the TCS Wellington, and is assigned to the Hermes as a full fledged combat pilot.

Jeremy “Floyd” Pink

  • Rank:Second Lieutenant
  • Age: 25
  • Branch: Terran Confederation Space Force
  • Billet: Pilot, 47th Fighter Wing, TCS Hermes
  • Notable Previous Billets: Pilot trainee, 367th Training Wing, TCS Wellington
  • Campaign Role: Wingman (Minor)

Bio

Fourth generation Colonial, of British ethnicity. He spent several years as a shuttle pilot in the Horizon Spacelines between Earth and the Inner Colonies, where he was a first officer of an inter-stellar transport. In between, he ran an electro-acoustic band, in which he played vocals and guitar. His music passion got the better of him to the point that he began showing up “late” to his flights, and soon afterwards, he was fired from Horizon Spacelanes. Not having anywhere else to go, Jeremy enlisted into the Terran Confederation military to go into OCS for flight training. He was one of Sandman’s classmates.

Was originally unmotivated during his tenure at OCS, with barely passable grades and questionable attitude his first few weeks. Candidate Pink was seriously considering throwing the towel and voluntarily quitting the program, until he found out that his old charter travel company had volunteered to take part in the Battle of Earth as the vanguard for Admiral Tolwyn’s Fleet. Most of his former friends and coworkers were annihilated by the Kilrathi. Pink’s attitude did a complete 180: he successfully completed OCS and accepted a commission as a Second Lieutenant.

Transferred to the TCS Wellington, where he was an above average performer in the training wing. Here, he had honed in his resolve and realized for himself what it means to become a Terran Confederation fighter pilot. A natural flyer from his experience in the shuttle lanes, Floyd’s impulsive and “devil may care” nature has landed him in hot water many times, both inside and outside the cockpit. But he always survives somehow.

Floyd survives the Wellington’s destruction, and is assigned to the TCS Hermes as a replacement pilot.

Angela “Panzer” DeMarco

  • Rank:Second Lieutenant
  • Age: 23
  • Branch: Terran Confederation Space Force
  • Billet: Pilot trainee, 367th Training Wing, TCS Wellington
  • Campaign Role: Supporting character (Novel)

Bio

Assigned to the Wellington’s training wing. Varsity cross country and lacross athlete in high school, she was offered an appointment to the Space Naval and Space Force Academy. She declined both offers, as she had “mixed feelings” about the Kilrathi War and serving as a member of the military. She spent time as an activist during her time at the University of Manila’s political science program, working as a volunteer for the Galactic Move On pacifism movement.

Her viewpoint drastically changed when her older sister, a fighter pilot who graduated from the Space Force Academy, was killed in action. After researching the details of her sister’s death, Angela did some serious soul searching about the fate of humanity and what was at stake. Now ferociously determined to do her part to the war effort, she applied for the highly competitive Officer Candidate School program and was accepted (based on the posthumous accomplishments of her sister).

DeMarco is now a no-nonsense, driven, and intense officer, one of the most aggressive and outspoken flight trainees from the recent OCS class. Her callsign steams from her ability to “steamroll” over anybody she conceives as weak-minded. Recent psych interviews reveal that Lt. DeMarco feels guilty for her previous actions and changed her personality in an attempt to redeem herself to her dead sister, who she never got along with due to their differing views. However, no future psychological treatment is recommended as Lt. DeMarco has been declared mentally stable and is consistently in the top 10% of her OCS and flight training class.

Thad “Champ” Cooper

  • Rank:Second Lieutenant
  • Age: 22
  • Branch: Terran Confederation Space Force
  • Billet: Pilot trainee, 367th Training Wing, TCS Wellington
  • Campaign Role: Supporting character (Novel)

Bio

Assigned to the Wellington’s training wing. Son of Senator Henry Cooper, a member of the Terran Confederation Senate Committee for Military Expenditures. Majored in studio art from the University of Auburn. President of his college fraternity, lead officer of his college Federalist political party interest group, and captain of the varsity hyperball team. His callsign “Champ” refers to being an All-Confederation fullback during his four years in school. Selected for flight training and attended Officer Candidate School with David Markham, Jeremy Pink, Haley Hasselbeck, Joe Hornaday, and Angela DeMarco.

Cooper is highly athletic and set several class records during his time in OCS (one of his more dubious records in which he outdrank more liquor shots then anyone of his peers), but he was ranked near the bottom of the class in academics, peer reviews, and military bearing. He is confident, overly cocky, and arrogant. Being a powerful Senator’s son has given him every privilege ever since he was little, and that includes getting selected to train as a Confed fighter pilot.

Champ is a capable pilot in his own right and a decent shot, but has a reputation as an unreliable safety hazard, and a thrill-seeker. His classmates see him as the second incarnation of Maniac Marshall – but without the skills.

Kenneth 'Kettle' Baws

  • Rank: Major
  • Age: 34
  • Branch: Terran Confederation Space Force
  • Billet: Commanding Officer, 811th Fighter Squadron, TCS Hermes
  • Notable Previous Billets: Executive Officer, 367th Training Wing, TCS Wellington
  • Campaign Role:Wingman, Squadron Leader

Bio

Graduated the Space Force Officer Candidate School program in 2658 and assigned to the Waging Wasps Squadron onboard the TCS Kyoto on his first tour of duty. Kettle flew a Hornet fighter throughout the several failed campaigns by ConFleet to take the Enigma Sector. Transitioned to the Epee fighter in 2661, and spent three more years onboard the Kyoto till the day she went down in the Battle of the Enigma Black Hole.

After recovering from injuries sustained during the loss of the Kyoto, Captain Baws was then assigned to the TCS Gibraltar. She served with her well, and survived the loss of the Gibraltar when Prince Thrakhath’s forces annihilated the Confederate 6th Fleet in the Deneb Disaster. He was then assigned over to the TCS Wolfhound, and was decorated during several intense fleet actions. He was promoted to Major; not soon afterwards, he led an Epee squadron against the Imperial Home Fleet during the Battle of Vukar Tag. Upon the completion of this tour, he is assigned to the training carrier Wellington as a flight instructor.

Major Baws is a combat veteran who has Been There Done That; and sometimes has a dual personality. He is mostly easy-going at first, but is rather impatient and tends to get angry easily, hence his callsign “Kettle”. He recently has been taking private anger management courses to hone in his temper; something that is essential when one is assigned a squadron of rookies to train.

After his instructor tour on the Wellington comes to an abrupt end, Major Baws is rotated back to the front line as a combat pilot and squadron commander.
