  • adresses possible audio problems.

I know it is mentioned under "Known Issues", but I had it working normally in the latest FSO builds, so I'm a bit surpised it does not work in WC Saga.

Despite having installed OpenAL correctly I can only choose "Generic Software", which is giving me rather bad sound.

I hope there will be a solution for this. Thanks in advance.

I'm using "Generic Software" and I never had any problem with it.

My Laptop:
ATI Radeon HD 4570
Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 2.2 GHZ
4 GB RAM
Windows 7 Professional 32-bit

My big PC:
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Intel Celeron 2.0 GHZ
about 700 MB RAM
Windows XP 32-bit
Soundblaster Audigy

I'm using generic sound as well and have not had any problems with it. There are two options for generic sound, have you tried both of them.

System Hardware:
MB: GigaByte GA-X58a-UD3R w Intel X58 Chipset
CPU: Intel Core I7-980x Extreme Edition 3.33GHz
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5770 1Gb GDDR5 16X PCIe
RAM:12GB DDR3/1333MHz Corsair Triple Channel
Sound: Creative Labs X-FI XtremeGamer 24-BIT PCI

Bad in what way? But generall we have no influence over which devices are offered by OpenAL, we just query that API. Depending on the OpenAL version however I've seen just Software being available, but we never experienced any trouble with it.

What exactly is the problem?

This is not really engine related but an OpenAL issue. You might wanna try and reinstall it, or maybe install a different version?

Two options? I only get one. "Generic Software on Lautsprecher (Creative SB X-Fi)" or "no sound". I think there is something missing there...

PS: Oh and pardon me for saying it would not be ideal with software. In the very first moment I thought it sounded a bit..."tinny". ^^

As already stated, there's not necessarily two options. One is just fine in some cases. The type of device OpenAL lists also depends on what version of OpenAl you have installed.

You still haven't commented on your sound troubles though. In what way in the sound 'bad'?

See the edit / "PS" above. Sorry, my bad. ^^

PS: Well there is some "cracking" in the speakers when I enter and navigate the menu, but this is something I have always had in FSO. It's not very noticeable, nor very loud and it doesn't happen all the time. I's okay, nothing to report. :D

Tinny, hmm. Well, the only thing I noticed with software vs hardware device settings is usually a differnt mixing. but again, that is handled by OpenAL, not our engine.

i suggest just playing around with our volume sliders ingame and see if it gets any better, and if it doesn't work, try a different version of OpenAL, maybe even 32bit vs 64bit if you have a 64bit OS.

That might do the trick.

Just checked a bit:

connect.creativelabs.com/openal/ ... 84%A2.aspx

This seems to suggest that there are no "generic hardware" devices supported by OpenAL on Vista.

The latest OpenAL version is 2.0.7.0 as far as I know and there is only one version. The only version mentioning either 32 or 64 bit is from 2007 (two years older then 2.0.7.0). Guess I'll stick with the newer version then. :)

PS: Am using Win7 Professional 64bit by the way. Guess it makes no difference, just wanted to mention it.
