I'm on the second mission and I'm told to link my nav system to the transport ship I'm escorting by flying within 950m. I do so, and nothing happens.
Is there a trick to doing this?

OK, that sounds like a bug. Could you download the
debug build support tool
and follow instructions there to produce the support ZIP and post it here?

One hint if you got a problem like this:
Use the mission log in cockpit with F4. There you can find Objectives, Messages and Events so you can see what's the situation and what do you have to do.
