Not a scripted event, these ships are just that fragile, and the AI suck at evading fire when on a bombing run. When flying a true bomber or a heavy fighter like the Thunderbolt, they tend to do alright, but the Saber is meant to use its agility to overcome its fragility.51573R RAY wrote: they get taken down by the two corvettes even if no fighters are present, so it may even be a scripted event.

It's very tricky yes, probably a bit too tricky. But also remember that this is just a secondary objective and saving just one of the sabres is perfectly fine and even losing them all doesn't make any difference. You MIGHT lose out on the vega badge if you screw up some more during the vega campaign but most of the time it's no big deal. The real objective in this mission is not getting shot to bits by Fireclaw, not saving both sabres. having both survive is a secondary objective for a reason.
