There are two kitty waves heading for the bombers when you reach the corvettes. The bombers won't defend themselves or evade shots, so you'll have to prevent the enemy from hitting them. The best way to do that is to aggro the fighters by shooting them. Don't try to destroy them at first, just make sure none are heading for the sabres. Once you've taken care of the fighters, escort the bombers to the corvette and draw their fire while the sabres do their bombing run.

Note that after that:

I'd attack the cats right away. And don't hesitate to turn the difficulty down a bit, that mission is one of the toughest in the entire campaign.

This mission is absolutely brutal. I have yet to be able to keep the bombers alive - they get taken down by the two corvettes even if no fighters are present, so it may even be a scripted event. Until you get to the Corvettes it's relatively easy, just makes sure you don't use any missiles or take any damage.

Attack the same Corvette as your wingman, and approach from an angle that puts the target corvette in between you and the other one. That way you won't be caught in a crossfire. I put all my engine energy into shields, afterburned into range, targeted the turrets, and afterburned out before my shields went down. Just be patient and you can take down the corvettes without taking too much damage.

Once you get to the ace, missiles away! The ace will try to get on your tail and launch missiles, so have your finger on the chaff key. Take out his wingmen with missiles while you avoid his, and then take him out.

Not a scripted event, these ships are just that fragile, and the AI suck at evading fire when on a bombing run. When flying a true bomber or a heavy fighter like the Thunderbolt, they tend to do alright, but the Saber is meant to use its agility to overcome its fragility.

The solution I've found is to try and get the corvettes to focus their fire on you rather than the bombers.

the only fire you need to draw is from the rear tachyon turret of the corvette they are currently engaging. the other one or any of the laser turrets are not the problem. The rear tachyon turret will get them and they just cannot evade when trying to get a torpedo lock.

It's very tricky yes, probably a bit too tricky. But also remember that this is just a secondary objective and saving just one of the sabres is perfectly fine and even losing them all doesn't make any difference. You MIGHT lose out on the vega badge if you screw up some more during the vega campaign but most of the time it's no big deal. The real objective in this mission is not getting shot to bits by Fireclaw, not saving both sabres. having both survive is a secondary objective for a reason.

that may be true but in my game the second sabre never fired his torpedo at the 2nd cap ship after ten minutes real world time, I took it out myself with laser fire
