Can you kill Deathfang the first time you encounter him?

This is driving me nuts. I must have played the mission ten times trying to kill him but he always gets away. I've tried everything including saving all my IR missiles and firing them all off at him once his shields are down and no joy. I'm really getting annoyed now.
