Models and textures was created by Herr_Koos
Hi guys,

You may recall I posted some time ago regarding the wooden Wing Commander ship models I built. Thanks to your outstanding modelling work, I have much better source material than even before to improve my models and build new ones.

I have a few quick questions that I hope you can help out with.
- What was you reference for the ingame ship models? Shapes, textures etc? Is this a giant secret or is there an archive of WC ship info floating around somewhere that I can use?
- Following on the above: Due to the Saga timeline, you have mainly WC3 models with some WC2 throwbacks. Say I wanted models of similar quality and detail for ships from other WC games, such as WC IV or Prophecy. Where would I start looking?

Thanks in advance. I can't wait to get my hands dirty!

Hey,

Thanks for your support and your enthusiasm. Really appreciate it.

We used the WC CIC for quite a few reference shots, and we also had to go back to the original games and get screenshots as well. I don't know of who is making similar grade WC4 and WCP style vessels. Try contact ScoobyDoo or Lars here on the forum, I know they're making their own fleet of customized vessels.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. :-) I want to stay as authentic to the originals as possible. Hence my question as to your source material. I've spent quite a bit of time on the CIC already, will keep digging.

The screengrabs from the original games are obviously very low detail by today's standards. Would I be right in assuming you had to take some creative licence with something like the ship panelling detail?

I will try and PM Lars or Scooby as well. Thanks again for all the work you guys put in to make Saga such a fantastic game. I feel like a kid again. :-)

You are correct. The approach we took was common sense. We knew that due to engine limitations, some aspects of a model might not be representative of what was truly intended. Given today's progress in technology, trying to make things exact exact to the specific pixel is kinda dumb. It is also rather obsessive compulsive :| It was up to the designer's to fill in the gaps.

Yes well, some model builders tend to be a bit OC when it comes to getting the details right.. :D Fortunately I've always been a "it's close enough" kind of guy. Many thanks once again for the feedback.
