No story except for the missions?

I just discovered WC-Saga, and I love it!

I have just one question:
So far, I'm about 10 missions into the main campaign, and I only have seen one "backstory text window" (the very first one explaining the arrival on the Hermes, getting assigned to the squad etc.).
Except for that one long text window, I'm just going from debriefing of one mission directly to the briefing of the following mission - no background story, no video, nothing in between.
Is that the way it's supposed to be, or am I somehow missing the backstory?

No,you aren't missing anything. Most people disliked the fiction viewer texts in the prologue release so they were dropped for the release of the main campaign

But if you don' know already: You can select the new version of the Prologue in the campain screen. It is both the tutorial and provides some background story. You should also check out the manual, it contains a lot of information as well.

Right. Not only did many people dislike the "wall of text", we also didn't have the time budget to complete the entire fiction and polish it. And frankly, videos... that would have been impossible.

There ARE cutscenes between the missions though, just not between ALL of them. But we do have story driving cutscenes.

I'm relieved that I have not been missing big parts of the story just because I was too dumb to find the "show text between missions" checkbox - but on the other hand I miss exactly that a bit, because I enjoyed the dialogues / video sequences outside of the actual missions in the original WC series very much.

... anyway: I fully understand that the main focus has to be the missions (and that a big set of cutscenes are next to impossible for a project like yours), and you did a great job with that - both technically and storywise!

Look into the game installation folder. There is a PDF manual located there.

You will find much more in-depth background of TCS Hermes, history & reputation of each Fighter wing squadrons. Also including analysis of the Kilrathi Aces. You will feel more at home with these background story & information described in the PDF.
