Not particularly good at this. was created by thiosk
In the days of my youth, I remember gliding through the sky, blasting kilrathi with wanton abandon.

I fired up darkest dawn and got my nearly unused CH Fighterstick working (havn't had a worthy game to play for a few years). Can't hit the broad side of a barn. :x Got into the second prologue mission-- I'm fairly certain I lost the transport within the first few seconds, and then continued dogfighting for what has to have been an hour or so. Learning what ion cannons were helped substantially, but something isn't right.

Perhaps someone can provide some tips or setting suggestions that would make it actually possible for me to fly the ship in a way that can result in successful targeting? What joystick sensitivity and deadzone settings do you use? I tried turning the sensitivity WAY down, and that helped, but overall it was a very tough ride.

My hand hurts.

For reference:
what difficulty level did you use?

Lasers should be sufficient for most kilrathi fighters (I encounterd so far), thus not only Ion Cannons are needed.

I used easy difficulty, and was needing to score a large number of hits to bring down the Razor and demon fighters. Mostly because my shots were so innacurate most were absorbed by shields. I was simply unable to track a single vessel long enough to score more than a hit or two. My typical strategy was using the match speed command and then just stay behind the slower vessels.

It went so poorly and took so long that I grew suspicious about the joystick settings.

For my flight stick I set deadzone to minimum (1st setting from the left) and the sensitivity to almost minimum (3rd setting from the left).
And the rest comes with practice ;)

A suggestion, if you are very close on an enemy's tail and he pulls up try holding the "Z" key. While depressed it will drop your speed allowing you to make a smaller turn circle and so get a better shot at the plan view of the enemy fighter. Also use full guns, that is both your Lasers and Ion cannons together. It will suck up more power but any hits you do land will do more damage.

Consider playing with the mouse instead of the joystick. I know it's a queer advice but I have checked the two devices ingame and for me, the mouse is more precise - by far - than the stick.
Initially I have planed to play only with the stick but, as the stick doesn't work until the last beta release, I was forced to play with mouse and I have changed my point of view...

For the gameplay, the escort missions are - as usual - more difficult than the others. The tactic is simple : target the bombers first. There is a command to target only the bomber, see the option screen.

Another hint : adjust the energy levels between Guns, Shields and Engine. Most of the time, I set the engine power to minimum to give a boost to guns and shields. When on an escort mission you can even give another unit boost to your guns as the pirates or cats targets the capships most of the time.
When you take too many hits, higher the shield power up to the max minus one unit.

You can also decrease the difficulty another notch; that will probably make things less frustrating. Other than that, I tend to use the minimum possible deadzone; the sensitivity you'll need to try different values to see what works well for your stick. For mine, I leave it at about 3/4 full, but it really depends on the hardware you have, as well as your personal preference.

thiosk might be quick to blame his own inexperience, and I always question myself as a factor, but I'm inclined to rule myself out this time. There's something less than ideal about what I would call the translational physics. The human interface here is much, much too squirrely, for lack of a better word. Any attempt to move the ship in some direction virtually always results in an embarrassing overshoot. By way of explanation, I've been playing with the mouse, which was actually suggested as a solution here, but it isn't, not at all, not even close.

The problem may be caused solely by the fact that moving the cursor doesn't have any effect at all, doesn't result in movement, until the cursor crosses that inner circle in the HUD. (I don't know the proper jargon.) There needs to be IMMEDIATE, if graduated, response when the cursor moves off center, not the unintuitive delay that occurs now. That appears to be the sole reason for the "squirrely" behavior: the player winds up moving the "stick" much too abruptly trying to elicit that first response, but by then it's already too late and the overcompensation is assured.

An earthbound equivalent would be a loose steering column in a car that required an excessive turn of the wheel to actually see the beginning of movement; another example would be a knob on a faucet with a loose center screw. It's as if the fighters in this game have steering with loose screws.

That's my estimation of what is making this game hard to play, even on Very Easy. It's not challenging and it's not fun! Now queue the ad hominem jokes about loose screws in 3..2..1....

Thank you for sharing your concerns. You may either try the latest patch, which introduces alternative control mode, or you could decrease deadzone/increase sensitivity.
