Did anyone like Wing Commander V?
I didn't.
I think they had a lot to work with built from the first three games keeping the Kilrathi as the main enemy. I didn't like the Bugs and I never got as hyped about whacking bags. Probably some of this is because I was older then, too. I don't know. I was disappointed. I would have preferred a sequel about the resurgence of the Kilrathi. What did you think?
And Wing Commander IV surprised me, too. Nothing in the first three games ever suggested to me that Confed was a democratic republic. I always had the impression from the first three games that Confed was a republic in the sense that the USSR or the Romans were a republic, but not a republic based on democratic ideals. I pictured Confed as a confederation of planets with disparate political systems. i would assume that most of these disparate political systems would e authoritarian because authoritarian governments are, even today in the "age of democracy", still the most common and plentiful. Particularly if you look at government throughout history. Even if Confed started with democratic ideals, I couldn't imagine a democratic society surviving 40 years of total war and maintaining their democratic ideals. What do you think?
Prophecy was a bit shallow compared to 3 and 4, sure, but the Kilrathi were no threat anymore, and after the issues in 4, the Border Worlds were pretty much quiet. Aside from fighting pirates, there would be no enemies. Introducing the Kna'thrak was an okay choice. It was Wing Commander, but hard to measure up to predecessors. It's like that with almost everything sequel.
I don't know. Wing Commander's sequels seemed to get better every time until 5. Despite my earlier criticism of IV, the game was substantially better than III.
And the Kilrathi ceased to be a threat in V because Origins decided the Kilrathi were no longer a threat. They could have made V about the rearming of the Kilrathi, or their superiority with cloaking technology, or anything they wanted. Germany was a greater threat than it had been originally 15 years after the first World War. 😊
"Germany was a greater threat than it had been originally 15 years after the first World War."
Yes, but consider if Germany had been annihilated, as in hole in the ground down to the core. I doubt the Germans that were outside the country at the time would be much of a threat to anyone after that. There's a difference between being a beaten people and being a civilization that is nearly wiped out of existence.
Besides, in Prophecy's manual they mention that some of the clans that remain are still somewhat hostile and conduct raids. Again, that's just busy work for the newest "stand-alone carrier force". To have a good story, you need a good villain, and certainly the bugs were such.
All of the Wing Commander games have been a thinly-veiled cross between World War II (pacific theatre) and the movie Top Gun (the default callsign in WC1 was "Maverick" for crying out loud). The ships (e.g. number and types of missiles carried) are Top-Gun flavored, but the plots have always been based off of World War 2, probably because Top-Gun was set during the Cold War, which didn't provide enough dramatic military air missions.
The destruction of Kilrah is analagous to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan; it took the fight out of the Japanese initially, but they bounced back fairly quickly, all things considered. On the other hand, Japan has a pretty minimal military presence to this day as a result of the treaties signed at the end of the war, so maybe it's reasonable to think the Kilrathi wouldn't be much of a military threat.
In either case, destroying Kilrah would be more like turning Berlin into a hole in the ground than it would be all of Germany. The capitol is destroyed, but the rest of the "empire" is not. The defeat is more of a psychological one than it is a military one.
The situation was different between the two. The confederation was on it's last legs or not too far from it in 3. The Kilrathi even after the destruction of Kilrah still most likely had an equal military presence. With the assumed destruction of most of the forces orbiting Kilrah at the time. We know that the Hvar'kann itself had survived. How many other dreadnoughts had or were posted to other systems? They were 22km long! It was only the Kilrathi culture that helped stop them form wiping the Humans from the universe (the death of the emperor I assume). Any one could look at Kilrah after the T-bomb was delivered and guess what was used to make it happen just by the state of the planet itself as evidenced in 5 (yes I know in 3 you couldn't see the planet after the "shockwave"). I personally don't know how many planets the Kilrathi had "colonized" but a good deal of the population had to have survived. The a-bomb strikes were only effective I believe because the Japanese government didn't know that we didn't have more. We'd already shown that we were quite willing to murder innocents in the tens of thousands to win. If the Japanese government had known we'd only had the two bombs left to use after the tests they could have used that to light a fire under the people. Imagine instead of burning the "White" House to the ground in the War of 1812 They'd murdered the entire city, It would be different being the capitol but that's where the differences end. The US has a good deal of genocide under it's belt as well. Or have we forgotten the people who "owned" the land we live on now before it was "taken" from them (and then what happened in the 60's). TPAJAX Project anyone? That could've ended much worse. This is just one example. The Kilrathi, if it wasn't for their culture, could've analyzed the data from the destruction of Kilrah and correctly assumed it couldn't have been done anywhere else. The war could've turned much worse. Especially had Thrakhath survived.
I must admit that WC 5 was my first Wing Commander game. 😁 Before I either had not the sufficient hardware, or the money to buy it, or both.
And I thought it was a fun game, especially the real film scenes. So yes, I liked it. 😊
I liked it, too. It had a few really cool new ideas, e.g. the Supercarrier Midway, not to mention that the player was the son of Major Michael "Iceman" Casey from WC1...
The issue with Prophecy was that it really didnt have a chance to develop. it was obviously planned as the start of a new era of WC games. but origin backed off and started entering the MMO marketspace and we're then eventually bought out. Chris Roberts then went on to hollywood to make movies, plus the two lead developers went on to start up a military training program and got out of gaming alltogether. It may have been better given the context (and content) that was planned for it rather than just fizzling out.
Confederation - "2.A more or less permanent union of countries with some or most political power vested in a central authority"
That doesn't mean authoritarian, that means federalism.....
so it is logical that it would be a free system of government.
Yes i did a lot.
The Gameplay was the best in a WC Game, in it Missles made finally sense. In WC 3 and 4 i basicly never used them unless i basicly was right up the Enemies butt, a few inches further and they basicly always evaded. (btw that part makes WC Saga better) The Fighters were nice and you could feel the huge technoligy diffrence compared to the WC 3/4 Ships. The Dog Fights were in my mind even more intense than in WC 3 and 4.
While i kinda disliked the main character actor, mostly i guess because i wanted to continue as Blair. In the End i got used to him. What i disliked was that despite this huge ship, you hardly had places to go and it was much more straight in the story line than the games before. I hardly felt that i could choose something. So for example i missed that you could choose on which female character you go flirt on and start a romance with.
I also liked the story as it was interresting with all this phropecy stuff and the intro sequence and in general it doesnt seem to be that bad, afterall the same story arc was used in the Star Trek univers with Voyager and Species 8472. I remember seeing the Voyager Episode on TV and when they blowed up the Borg Planet i was like "thats soooooo Wing Commander rip off". An honestly after all that time and all that happened, to make another game with the Kilrathi as the main evil force would have been ridicelus. After such events if story writer go with that story plot than it only shows that they cant think of something new anymore. They only thing i disliked in the story is what they made out of the Kilrathi, that proud honorfull race became a huge peacefull hippie party, they could have given them some worthy backbone and let them really join the fight, so they would have stayed true to some of their believes.
Oh and the only odd thing in this game was, well while it was a lot of fun, you have here a race thats supposed to be more evil and stronger than the Kilrathi, you never had faced their technoligy before and then i get a shot down count from over 10000 kills. Why should i fear an enemy that has such lousy pilots? 😂
Oh and the really only huge problem i have with WC 5 is the end.
Spoiler (click to reveal)
I mean there dies (yeah i know that we dont know what happened with Blair and that he may had returned, but from the Confederation point of view he is KIA) the BIGGEST war hero of the Kilrathi War, the Hero that stopped the war with the Border Worlds, the designer and think tank behind the Midway, the main character of 4 WC Games and yet there is absolute NO memoral ceremony for him in the End. Just a stupid "he didnt make it" line.
I also like WC 5 back there. I had really no problmes with future fan WC Saga campaigns in this story line with the new ships. One ship had a gatling gun, i really love that 😁
WC5 was aiming to break new ground and would have led into a whole new set of story arcs for a WC6, sadly that got canned. I loved how it looked and that the game was more detailed for the flight scenes.
honestly, it sucked ass in my opinion. what i totally hated about Prophecy was the simple fact that NONE of the cap-ships u shot a torpedo at get TRUELY destroyed, all you get is a series of explosions running across the hull, i mean COME ON wheres the Massive boom and hull pieces!!!

Bravo......I was wondering if anyone else ever caught that. Only someone whos both a Trekker and Wingnut would make that connection. You may be interested to know that Trek producer Brandon Bragha started with Wing Commander Academy and has been a fan ever since. Chris Roberts also has an encyclopedic knowledge of both Star Trek and Star Wars. There is more than one cross reference and inspirations between the two if you're savvy enough to spot them.

Err nope A feudal system is also a federal system. in other words the word federal is no synonym for democratic and even if given the name the question remains how much actual influence the People have on their Government. In reverse a dictatorial or Monarchic system may be a haven of civil rights, good governance and offer the people more actual influence then one might expect.
On the topic: With out the Kittys it just wasn't Wingcommander for me so no didn't like V.
Sorry, but I strongly disagree with the OP. I think WC 5 was different, but to me...a bit harder than the previous WC games.
True, you had a "new" rookie to get used to all over again, but I loved the way the game showed the "old guard" of Blair interacting with the "new rookie" which was Casey and showing him the ropes.
I loved the game myself. And as others have pointed out, once the Kilrathi were decimated, there was not much coming back from that. So the Kilrathi were basically a footnote in the history of WC after Kilrath was bombed.
I am just dissapointed they do not make games like these anymore.
Well I greatly enjoyed blowing up the bugs too...but I had a minor problem: it was knowing which bug ships were a threat to the Midway; I had a devil of a time trying to figure out which ones were the cap ship killers.
Out of WC III-V, my favorite was III. IV was brilliant as well, but III just had everything down so well and they made great use of greenscreen for the time.
I liked V (Prophecy), but it was my least favorite out of III-V. I actually played through IV and Prophecy again recently, and I still enjoyed them thoroughly. I was thinking about playing III again, but it would require DosBox and it has no rudder or throttle support. Then I discovered WC Saga, and wow, it's even better than Prophecy I think. 😊 Looks like this is the game I'll be playing for now.
btw incredible work! I find myself more impressed with WC Darkest Dawn than I was with Black Mesa. Thank you for this wonderful game.
Hammer, if you want to play WC3 again, grab it from GOG.com They have nrs 1-4 on there now, and the DOSBox bit is sorted out automatically.

I have no problems using DosBox, I've used it lots. but it's just annoying that there isn't rudder support for WC3, unless you happen to have the Kilrathi Saga edition of it. I have original retail DOS versions of both III and IV. I got IV for my birthday many years ago, and then I bought III off the internet at a time when it was very hard to find... I am glad I found it. 😊 I upgraded my IV with the DVD upgrade, but it has to be played windowed to alleviate any potential issues.
But all that's on hold, I'm kinda stuck playing WC Saga now. 😊 Great game, I would've gladly paid money for it.
Understood. I have the Kilrathi Saga, lucky me. 😁
Yeah, I was at Best Buy many years ago and saw them selling the WC Kilrathi Saga. I should've bought it, it's impossible to find now. It's too bad GoG doesn't sell the Kilrathi Saga for Windows, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
