Please let us know what you think of the music so far.

It's OK, I really like that tune in the debriefing. The main hangar music was better in Beta1/2 IMHO. Did the music played during missions changed since Beta2, because I think there's more percussion accents in those tracks.

As I said recently, I'm very impressed with the music. It sounds like George Oldziey's music but it's still original. ➡️

I like it too. Sound near to the other Wing Commander 3 sounds and fit in to the others.

One thing I noticed: It sounds quite bad when the music starts all over in the main menu. The track ends pretty abruptly and starts just after that - doesn't fit at all.

There are two options which would sound much better: 1. The track keeps looping with use rnot noticing the loop point. 2. The track ends properly (though the current track really lacks a decent finish) and let it be silent for a few seconds before the track restarts.

Adding a pause should be possible. Please open a Mantis ticket.

I've posted a lot about the music in the past (I feel that way anyways 😊) and I have to say that I'm still a fan even now. Sometimes music can age badly but I think it has the right flavour. More importantly the missions seem to be using the right music at the right moments now... which was a problem before. I know you guys worked hard on getting that right. For example, I haven't noticed music being inappropriate for the situation which was a problem before.

Thumbs up from me.

I LOVE the soundtrack. It captures the "Wing Commander" ambience without being derivative of the original works, makes Saga it's own game... which I would hope was the objective all along?

Yes it was the goal. For the next iterations you will hear some re-orchestrations of old Wing Commander III ambient tracks but after that we finally and truly go our own way and stray further from the Oldziey style, ending the game in music that is truly our own style.

That sounds interesting, I can't wait to hear it. From all WC titles (not counting Privateer which had THE best music score IMHO) I think I liked WC2 the most, but each game had its moments. I hope your music score will be as much amazing or even better 😉

Tune in for a preview! 😉

WOW great stuff, little different feel than Oldziey's, maybe more close to Privateer. Is this final or is it couple of patterns put together, because you had some very good theme building up at 0:34 - 0:37 switching abruptly to some other gloomy one?

I believe it is final, yes. Working with composers is not easy by any means. Taking into account just how much original music was created for the game, we can consider ourselves lucky.

Amazing! Sounds good to me. It's catchy and I love how themes get builded up just to be destoyed before reaching their climax. This is how a dog fight should sound. But damson is right. The theme at 0:34-30:37 could evolve into a stunning atmospheric intro music.

*bump*

As I wrote in the Caliban threads, I love the new track(s?) I heard so far. They fit perfectly into the WC universe and the game. You did a great job on that.

I really love the tracks, even the Remastered WC3 ones. But I wonder why a few notes are missing.

One thing I have to say is that how you managed to fit the right songs to the right time and place is just amazing! Every briefing/debriefing, every mission has it's own "mood" which heavily depends on the music played. This might be the way it should always be, but nowadays it isn't always like this! Most new games come with a generic soundtrack with some orchestra parts, some electronic parts and remains the same through most of the game. I appreciate the effort you put into the music because it is an important part of the games atmosphere.

Yep, we used to flip a coin.

Mind if I borrow that coin from you before I'll have to make the next big decision ? 😁

Something that came to my mind:

The main hall theme is great and it brings a kind of spirit of optimism, but the music starts so suddenly and somehow "loud" that sometimes I'm not far away from a heart attack, especially if my speakers are nearly maxed.

However, no complaint or such, only a personal experience 😁

Write a bug, we'll see what we can do.

One question to the composer: The Soundfont you used to play and record the MIDIs: Was it Crisis General Midi 3.0?

Edit: A little comment to the Caliban tracks: The ambient Track reminds me on "Battle in the Mutara Nebula" from the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Soundtrack and the Battle Track sounds similar to this one from Star Trek: Legacy. (Are they actually inspired from those?)

I really like the soundtrack. It creates that distinct Wing Commander atmosphere. However, I noticed that in the main hall, but also during missions, the end of one and the beginning of another track is quite noticeable, especially during the more calmer moments in a mission. Maybe you could try to make the transition a little bit more smoother.

Sorry, time for that is over. We cannot do everything perfectly, we simply don't have the budget.

We had a budget? 😂

I can understand this and it is a very small issue anyways. Most of the time during missions you are absorbed in space combat or listening to comm chatter, and the soundtrack offers the fitting (and perfect) musical background. 😊

EDIT: Just wanted to add a big kudos to the newly arragend Main Hall music! Much much better now. I really love how the music is gradually building up to its uplifting main theme 😊

Guys, I just started the new Beta iteration "Orsini" for the first time. VERY NICE THING what you did with the music in the main menu!!! I think it's perfect! It has a somewhat epic character now, just amazing; reminds me on the Deep Space Nine intro a little bit.

I think that the new Mainhall theme fits better than the old one. 😊

I am glad you are enjoying the "new" mainhall theme. At first, I wasn't sure about the new rendition, but after listening in a few times, I really like it.

I don't know why, but the beginning reminds me of the Band of Brothers main theme - fitting somehow 😊

Tim Janssens is a great composer, with numerous tv projects going to his credit, so it is not really surprising. The OST in the second part of the game is his doing.

That is nice, you reckognize a professional's work when listening to the soundtrack. I'm curious: can you name one or two of these tv shows he worked on? And how did you manage to "recruit" him?

I never asked, but feel free to visit his profile on myspace http://www.myspace.com/timjanssens (since his official website is currently under construction) - he is very lovely chap.

As far as recruiting goes - he came to use and not vice versa. Story of the project really, we had a very small core team, but when we needed, great developers came forward to help out.

Speaking of which - did anybody notice the new intro theme?

Tolwyn wrote:Speaking of which - did anybody notice the new intro theme?
Yeah right, forgot to mention that, too. Basically the same reaction as for the main hall theme 😊 nice!

Stinger"] Samee here. 😊

Tolwyn wrote:Speaking of which - did anybody notice the new intro theme?
Right away! My immediate (and apparently subconscious reaction) is to hit the login button and reach for the speaker volume knob as that first blast from the old menu music was intense. Probably too intense. But this new piece is lovely and it had me humming along. Particularly once the piece starts to pick up about 25 seconds in.

I was actually referring to the hermes_intro cutscene... nevermind. 😉

Oh... well I didn't listen to that 😊

You, sir, bloody well should! 😉
