A note on videos

Now that we are soon releasing Beta 4 I'd like to ask any of you guys who are planning to do feedback videos to do videos of your first playthrough of the new missions if possible. Your first impression would really be interesting for us. (But please listen to the briefing and the dialogue and read the mission objectives when you do... *cough*Nightmare*cough*

We will have one large campaign with all 13 missions in it. if you want to access an individual mission please go to the missionsim screen and press Ctrl-Shift-S to show the not-yet-unlocked missions there (you have to have selected the campaign however)

Please do replay the entire campaign also since we will keep this campaign file from now on and only update it with the new missions, so we need to know if it works correctly and plays all the cutscenes etc. (Also starting it is the only way to see our intro 😉 )

I have been playing with making some videos and got full mission videos down from 70Gb to 5Gb by lowering the resolution and compressing the video. The apparent problem is that 5Gb video looks to take 70 hours to upload to the website given for these. For options I can make videos for partial missions (i.e. Nav point to Nav point)and this will reduce the size of the file even more; however I think it will still be over 1Gb.

Anyone have any suggestions. I now have first flight commentated playthrough videos for Loki 1 through Loki 3, but I'm not sure what to do with them as they are big files.

I used Dxtory, and the Dxtory video codec. One of the options given allows the user to select different formats within the codec. I choose YUV410(4x4) - Low Quality, and below that was an option to "Compress" the video. Additionally, I'm running at 20FPS when recording, making the video smooth enough, but removing a few frames that would have been recorded under the default 30FPS (the naked eye can't normally tell 30fps vs. 18fps. but anything lower than 18 is visible). I initially tried using FRAPS, but it locked up do to the size of the videos being recorded.

Use formatfactory, convert to mp4, lower target bitrate. That should do the trick.

The problem I have encountered with formatfactory, is that it only allows 1 channel of audio for the video clip conversion. The clips I made in Dxtory have 2 channels of audio, 1 from the game and 1 being commentary as I play through the game. When I attempt to convert to MP4 using Formatfactory, it continually strips out my commentary. If all you want in the video is a play through without commentary, no problem. If you'd like the commentary, then we still have a problem.

So you could either include commentary or ingame audio? That would work too. Commentary is actually what we are after. 😉

There is, of course, a workaround, but it is pretty complex (and I have to look it up myself).

Your missions are very nice, you can however comment more about how you experience the mission, what surprises you, what bores you. Currently you're more describing your tactics (which is very intersting also), and you leave out your emotions a litte 😊

I think that's an excellent reason to record a video or two, isn't it?

I'm "working" on the paythrough videos right now. Won't be able to upload before Monday/Tues though (currently at my parents' house, where the internet upload speed is like 10 kb/s - do the math).

I've been posting videos as frequently as I can, in fact you have a few news ones to view as of today.

Once I'm there I will upload the stuff I have got so far. Got some unexpected admission (?) from another university, so I'm looking for apartments right now to be prepared in case I'm going there. The round trip just consumes a good amount of time. -_-

Guess I'm going to extract the collected thoughts from the videos to post a bit more feedback on the forums & create tickets if needed in the meanwhile.

Btw, can't I just upload the videos on YouTube and make 'em private? It would make access much easier for other beta testers.

I have completed my uploads for videos. I have posted one video for each mission through Torgo-3. Hopefully you'll find some of the comments useful, inaddition to laughing at me as fly the various missions.

While you're all restarting the campaign... do at least a few (except Thor, thanks again there) take videos? ^^

A quick feedback on your videos: Please also include command briefings and briefings in them and please COMMENT them. We also need feedback on them. If the objectives are clear, how you like the command briefings etc. We don'T just need feedback on the mission itself!

Thanks for the videos, but one note: Use a headset if possible if you have a lot of background noise going on. For some people the joystick klicks are louder than your voice 😉 😉

I'm still ashamed that I didn't manage to uplaod some videos by now. Since my studies are going to start again soon I'll concentrate on default testing for now and see if I have the time to give it another go once all missions have been implemented. I scrapped most of the recorded footage of the playthrough I started when Beta 6 got released - seriously need another external hard drive, gah... But well, there weren't exciting problem spottings anyway within the first missions.

Anyway, I'm sorry! 😳 But here's a tip for those who keep recording (and use a proper headset for comments). Use the sound mixer of Windows 7 to lower the WCS sound volume and make sure that your voice can be understood clearly while action is going on (by capturing some test footage). Otherwise it might be very annoying for the devs to listen to your thoughts. 😛

actually in most videos so far we hear too little of the game, not too much

Alternatively, keep the audio as two separate channels; DXTory does this by default, though it's a bit of a PITA to maintain this while compressing/reformatting the video. That way, game audio or player audio can be independently muted (assuming your video player supports this).

I have been using Format Factory to convert videos; however, it has started erroring out and has failed to convert after about 98% of the file has been run. Does anyone have another suggestion for a good video format changer?
