So, maybe this is just a pet peeve of mine and nobody else cares, but it's always bugged be about the FS2 engine games, including WCSaga. The pitch controls are "pure," meaning that they change only pitch. The roll controls are "pure." But for some reason, the "yaw" controls are not pure; they introduce a significant amount of roll as well. This was never the case in any of the older Wing Commander games, and it never made any sense to me here. In an air plane, the aerodynamics of flight mean that the various controls are not de-coupled, but in space there's no reason for one of the three control types to be impure. It also doesn't seem to affect anyone but the player; other ships have no trouble making a perfect pivot 90 degrees to the right, but for the player to copy that clean, crisp manoeuvre is nearly impossible.
I actually went into the FSO codebase a couple years ago and discovered it was easy to change; there's a line that basically says "when applying yaw, also apply 0.65*yaw to roll". I changed it for my personal copy, and enjoyed playing through FS2 that way. I understand, however, that some people like things the FS2 way, and you might not want to just get rid of it (even if that is what all the WC games did). I'm wondering how hard it would be to make it an option in the launcher, or have an optional "mod" that could be enabled to decouple yaw and roll? If no one but me notices or cares, or if this was a well-reasoned design decision, then so be it. That's why I brought this up in the forum, rather than posting a feature request to Mantis. But if it bothers other people the same way it does me, then it might be worth offering some option to change it. I know it's kind of late to be adding features, but I think this should be a really simple code change that shouldn't interact with anything else, which would make it fairly safe.
We know it is easy to change, we just don't want to ^^
I distinctly remember a lot of rolling going on when going for yaw in WC3 and 4. Especially when flying a longbow.
