Game crashes when Yorktown-class selected in Tech Database.

Forum ▸ Graphics

As I mentioned in the "Your Status" thread my desktop is in the shop so I am using my laptop right now. I am not sure if my laptop's graphics capability is below your "Minimum Specifications" or not. Still, I installed the Master Candidate on my laptop anyway just to see how it did on such a system.

Now on the issue I ecountered. I checked this on multiple graphics settings from low to very high with the same result. When I am looking at ships in the “Tech Database” in the tech room whenever I select the Yorktown-class the game crashes back to desktop with a windows "Wing Commaner Saga has stopped working." message box.

As this is with a fresh install and new game on the laptop and the “Ctrl-Shift-S” command is not active in the MC1 I am unable to check all of the game’s ships for this issue at this time. Still of the ships that are in the tech room as of the Brimstone missions no other tech database entry has caused this crash, only the Yorktown-class Carrier.

I am putting this unnder graphics due the the fact that the Tech Database displays ship models. It is possible that this could be an interface issue but I am betting on graphics.

Can anybody reproduce this??

@Light: I attached the debug build. That one also still supports Ctrl+Shift+S Please try to reproduce and send me the fs_open.log from your C:\Users\[Whatever]\Documents\Volition\Wing Commander Saga\data folder

@Light: Also try deleting the Yorktown related contents of your cache folder

I checked all of the entries in the “Tech Database” revealed by the "Ctrl-Shift-S" command. Only two of them gave me any trouble, the aforementioned "Yorktown" and the Kilrathi "Command Station". The Command Station I was able to resolve by deleting the "kb_starbase.ibx" and "kb_starbase.tsb" files from the cash. No issue now with the Kilrathi "Command Station".

The Yorktown however has not responded to the same action. Despite being deleted from the cache folder. In trying it three times I noticed that the "tcs_yorktown.ibx" files in my Recycle Bin all have different file sizes, 912KB, 1.77MB, and 1.80MB.

I can't seem to get the fs_open.log file to attach to the post. I might have to try and PM it to you instead.

Edit: I can't find how to attach a file in the PM system ether. I have cut and pasted the data in the file into the code box below instead.

I do not see anything out of the ordinary in the debug log. Please try the previous iteration of Yorktown, available here:

Placed the tcs_yorktown.pof file in the data\models folder and cleared cache of all yorktown files, still lockes up and then crashes.

He's right. I can confirm the issue.

I've also attached my log in case you need more data.

I'll upload different yorktown revisions later

By the way, guys. Do you have skype and are online during the next few hours? I have an idea what could be causing this but I need your feedback as I am not able to reproduce this issue.

Here you go. This should help us establish whenever or not the issue is caused by latest model file updates.

media.wcsaga.net/tolwyn/tcs_yorktown.zip

1. Rename one of the revisions to tcs_yorktown.pof (e.g. remove revision sufix) 2. place the pof file in data\models 3. Delete old cache files. 4. Run the game.

EDIT: also please try updated POF file media.wcsaga.net/tolwyn/tcs_yorktown.pof

EDIT2: Also, if neither Yorktown works, uninstall MC, delete anything that is left in the folder, delete the my documents/Volition.../cache folder.

I followed the procedure outlined above with all four POF files. All produced the same result, the game locked up and then windows shutdown the program.

Problem is - there is absolutely zero indication in the data files, which could cause this problem. I can't recreate this issue.

Have another go with this one

Ok people this is serious. I need testers for this on standby as much as possible. This is a fucking release stopper so we need to find this NOW!

@Stinger, Light: do any of you have ANY experience with c++ and/or Visual studio?

KeldorKatarn, No, sorry, I do not have any experience c++ or Visual studio. I have attached my latest "fs2_open" log file. Maybe something will contrast with the the earlier one.

Also, here is the most up to date POF file combined with my cache files. Place the pof file in data\models and the cache files in my documents\volition\...\cache

media.wcsaga.net/tolwyn/tcs_yorktown.7z

KeldorKatarn wrote:@Stinger, Light: do any of you have ANY experience with c++ and/or Visual studio?
My experience ends with "Hello world" unfortunately... sorry. How do I use the .pof file - do I need to extract the VP container first?

1. Create models folder in WCS\data and copy the pof file there. It will overwrite the one in the vp archive 2. Copy ibx and tsb file into the cache folder located in your my documents folder.

Guys... did anybody try to play the prologue missions in MC1? The game crashes when loading the Yorktown model - The missions won't start!!! Tested that with the debug build and the loading screen freezes and the game crashes with yorktown.pof.

Have you tried using the updated model?

And this happened thus far only on light's and your pc.

EDIT: do you have skype or icq?

Okay, I've used the new pof file. It is WORKING now. Tech database and missions are working fine.

My icq # is 271001823
